J.I. Rodale, who believed that modern agricultural techniques and American eating habits left quite a bit to be desired, founded Rodale Inc. in 1930. He knew that there was a direct relationship between the declining health of America's soil and the health of America's people -- a revolutionary view in those days.

In 1942, he started Organic Farming and Gardening magazine, which taught people how to grow better food by cultivating a healthier soil using natural techniques. J.I. put his theories into practice on a 60-acre farm near Emmaus, Pennsylvania, which is now the site of the Working Tree Center.

J.I.'s ideas slowly took root and spread and he is widely recognized as the father of the natural food and natural living movements in America. Today, Organic Gardening is the most widely read gardening publication in the world, providing its readers with the tools, ideas, sources, and information they need to successfully grow anything they choose without chemicals.

In 1950, J.I. introduced Prevention, a magazine that presented systematic ways people could try to prevent illness and disease, rather than wait for the need to cure it, another idea that bucked the established thinking of the day. Prevention is now the 11th largest magazine in the country and reaches nearly 11 million readers each month, encouraging them to take an active role in achieving and maintaining good health and fitness for themselves and their families.

Following J.I.'s death in 1971, his son Bob, who had been president since 1951, took over the leadership of the company. Under Bob's guidance, Rodale grew into the strong, positive force it is today, spreading the message You can do it across the pages of numerous books and magazines, all reflecting the philosophy that people really can take charge of their own lives. During his tenure, Rodale consistently published highly acclaimed books on gardening, health, home improvement, and fitness.

On September 20, 1990, Bob Rodale was killed in a traffic accident in Russia. He was there to develop plans for a long-term joint venture agreement. The first project completed was Novii Fermer, a Russian magazine devoted to sustainable agriculture. Upon Bob's death, his wife Ardath became Chief Executive Officer/Chairman of the Board.

In 2000, Steve Murphy joined the company as President and Chief Operating Officer, and was named President and CEO in 2002. Since then, Rodale has evolved into a highly creative content company known not only for its strong brands and emphasis on inspired editorial and innovative marketing, but also for its ability to connect with customers through multiple media formats.

Today Rodale publishes some of the best-known magazines in health and wellness, including Men's Health, Prevention, Runner's World, Best Life, Bicycling, Backpacker, Mountain Bike, Organic Gardening, and its most recent launch, Women's Health. And, as the largest independent book publisher in America with an expanding collection of international titles, Rodale has published best-selling books, including The South Beach Diet, which has become its own brand, and Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, which has topped The New York Times bestseller list. The company is also a leader in direct-response marketing and has more than 26 million active customers in its database. Rodale's brands have also extended into various media formats, including magazines, books, videos, and online, as well as an online subscription service business for both Rodale's and other businesses' brands, including BiggestLoserClub.com in partnership with the hit NBC TV show.

A family-owned company, Rodale actively practices what it preaches. Rodale was one of the first large U.S. companies to establish a no-smoking policy. Neither hard liquor nor tobacco advertising is accepted in the pages of any Rodale magazine. The company's more than 1,000 employees are treated to healthy, nutritious fare at the company's cafeterias and are encouraged to use the well-equipped employee fitness center.
